Award-winning writer to speak at naturalist­s’ meeting

Peterborou­gh Field Naturalist­s (PFN) will hold their 77th Annual General Meeting Friday, Jan. 19 at the Peterborou­gh Naval Associatio­n building located at 24 Whitlaw St. and if you would like to attend, you must RSVP before Friday, Jan. 5.

The event will include a meal at 6 p.m., the business portion of the meeting at 7 p.m., followed by a raffle/silent auction at 7:30 p.m. and the keynote speaker at 8 p.m. Doors open at 5 p.m.

Guest speaker, Steve Burrows is an award-winning mystery writer, journalist, and past recipient of a Nature Writer of the Year award from BBC Wildlife. Born in the UK, he moved to Canada as a youth, attended York University and then moved to Hong Kong where he served as editor of the Hong Kong Bird Watching Society magazine and a contributi­ng editor for Asian Geographic. In 2014 he published his debut novel, A Siege of Bitterns, followed by A Pitying of Doves (2015), A Cast of Falcons (2016), and A Shimmer of Hummingbir­ds (2017).

Christmas services

Fairhaven United Church will hold a Christmas Eve service Sunday, Dec. 24 at 7 p.m. Everyone is welcome. The church is located at 724 Centerline, Selwyn.

Northminst­er United Church is holding several special services for Christmas. On Sunday, Dec. 24, there will be a church service at 10 a.m., a family service at 7 p.m., and a communion and candleligh­t service at 9 p.m. On Sunday Dec. 31 there will be a carolling service to which you can wear casual Christmas attire if you wish. Everyone is welcome.

Public swims

The Allan Marshall Pool at the Trent University Athletic Centre is offering several public swims during the holiday season. Swim times this week will follow the regular schedule with swims taking place today and tomorrow from 2:30 until 3:30 p.m., Wed. from 2:30 until 4 p.m., and Friday from 2:30 until 3:30 p.m. and from 7 until 9 p.m.

Following that, the holiday schedule comes into effect during which public swims are scheduled for Sat., Dec. 23 from 1 until 3 p.m.; Sun. Dec. 24 from 10:30 until 11:30 a.m.; Wed., Dec. 27 from 1:30 until 3 p.m.; Fri., Dec. 29 and Sat., Dec. 30 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m.; Tues., Jan. 2 and Wed., Jan 3 from 1:30 until 4 p.m., Thurs., Jan. 4 from 1:30 until 2:30 p.m., Fri., Jan. 5 from 1:30 until 3:30 and from 7:30 until 8:30 p.m.; Sat., Jan. 6 from 1 until 2 p.m., and Sun., Jan. 7 from 2 until 3 p.m.

Lane swimming times and number of lanes varies by day. Visit https://www.trentu.ca/athletics/ for full details. The cost to swim is $4.25 for seniors and adults, $3.25 for students and children and youth ages four to 17. Children under three years old are free. There is a family rate of $10.50.

Winter hours begin January 8.

Students get fit

The Trent University Athletics Centre is offering a special membership to students who are home from university or college during the holiday break and are looking for a way to stay active. For just $38 they can purchase a membership which includes full privileges to the Athletic Centre.
