Lakefield grocer hands out 150 free turkeys

LAKEFIELD -- The Bletsoe family is helping Lakefield residents in need to put food on the table again this Christmas.

Ross and Carol Bletsoe own Lakefield Foodland. For the third year in a row, the Bletsoes have given away turkeys to customers in need.

After handing out 125 turkeys last year, they decided to increase their purchase to 150 this year.

A friend of Ross’s in Midland started the initiative a few years ago, and Ross decided to follow suit.

“It sounded like a nice idea and ... it gives us the opportunity to give back directly to one of our customers in this area,” Ross said.

Turkeys were given away between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. at the Queen St. store.

Although Ross seemed to think it was quieter this year, with fewer residents in before noon than last year, it could be a seen as a positive.

“If fewer people need it, that’s not a bad thing. Though I suspect there still is a need out there,” he said.

Simone Bever stopped by to pick up a small turkey for Christmas. She learned of the giveaway last year.

“I think it’s wonderful for the store to give us people in need some help during this season,” Bever said.

Bever expressed her gratitude for the thoughtful gesture and said she’s sure everyone who received one was just as grateful.

“It’s just marvellous, true Christmas spirit. And I’m so thankful,”

Bever said.

During the event, Ross is nearby in the store, but doesn’t hand the turkeys out himself in case it would make anyone uncomfortable.

He said he’s often approached

with a word of thanks and not just from those who’re benefiting.

“Most of the thanks have come from people who are not getting a turkey – they just say it’s a nice thing to do, and it is, I guess.”
