The Peterborough Sport and Wellness Centre, 775 Brealey Dr., offers a variety of exercise programs on land and in the salt-water pool to help everyone improve their overall wellbeing and fitness level and perhaps fulfill some of their New Year’s resolutions.

There are several new programs starting in January, including Aqua Pilates, Ballet at the Barre, Jump Rope Training, Josei No Judo, Bodyshred and Mind in Motion.

“Mind in Motion is a new partnership program with the Alzheimers Society,” says Jennifer Bell, Fitness and Lifestyle Coordinator. “It is a community-based social program that incorporates physical activity and mental stimulation for people with memory loss.”

They offer over 50 different programs for those of all levels and abilities, with personal trainers offering customized programs. Fitness programs are 12 weeks long and begin the week of Jan. 8, with registration open at www.peterborough.ca/pswc.

“If you are looking to start a fitness program, we have a number of different options and our fitness staff can help you find the best fit. During the winter months our walking track program is very popular. The Chair Yoga program and Stretch and Tone are also great options,” continues Bell.

Those easing back into exercise could consider a gentle lowimpact Aqua fitness class either in their therapy or leisure pools.

“The benefits of exercise are not just physical, but social and emotional. Winter can be a time of isolation when we just want stay in,” she says. “Exercise improves our mood, helps manage stress and can make us feel happier and more relaxed. Trying a new fitness class with family and friends can be just want we need in the winter months to boost energy, improve sleep and have some fun!”
