No Christmas spirit in ‘socialist tirade’

-

On Dec. 19, Mrs. Jenny Carter addressed the community in a letter to the editor with intended seasonal greetings under the Examiner’s title, “A Christmas message for the community.”

I waited on purpose until now to comment so as not to affect the expressed joy and thankfulness by the many in our community who celebrated the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ and what he stood for, as I and my family did.

Unfortunately, I was not able to detect any true Christmas message of love in her letter.

Instead I found the usual socialist tirade against most everything.

To note that the royal household at one time did not have a bathroom is virtuous but that Capitalism and the luxuries that it indeed can provide will lead to the end of the world and then lecture the reader as to whom we should vote for, goes beyond my ability to understand and do not need to hear at Christmas.

In the same edition, we found the heartbreaking account about the untimely death of the billionaire philanthropist couple Barry and Honey Sherman of Toronto. They practised worldwide generosity and support of charitable causes and made numerous multimillion dollar donations driven to make life better for others. No doubt much of that was enabled by hard work and the success of his pharmaceutical company, Apotex Inc. What does Mrs. Carter imply about such people and efforts in general? “Those who need to keep getting richer however rich they are will not find happiness. They are psychopaths, with no concern for anything but themselves.”

That seems to be Mrs. Carter’s epitaph for the Shermans, that wonderful, inspiring, generous couple.
