How to live an anti-inflammatory lifestyle

- SHARI DARLING THE SOPHISTICATED WINO

Another new year and another new year’s resolution and another new diet!

Hopefully the diet you choose includes wine. I’ve written about Weight Watchers in the past, even though I don’t follow a Weight Watcher’s plan.

Jack and I have followed (albeit not fanatically) an anti-inflammatory diet for the past five years. This way of eating most definitely improved our physical and brain health, which provided better quality of life for both of us. Most importantly eating this way decreased Jack’s chronic pain from arthritis.

The anti-inflammatory diet is really not a diet at all, but rather a lifestyle. Basically, this means incorporating into your daily food plan healthy fats, lean proteins, low glycemic vegetables and fruits and bone broth! This also means refraining from gluten, grains, processed foods and refined sugar.

Recent research shows that eating this way may help protect against certain diseases, reduces and can eliminate chronic pain associated with inflammation, and also slows the aging process.

Here is an anti-inflammatory soup paired with wine that will help you start off the new year in a healthy way. This soup is delicious and healthy, whether or not you are embracing any diet.

If you are interested in reducing inflammation in the body, it’s vital to keep wine consumption minimal.

How about Anti-inflammatory Coconut, Ginger, and Turmeric Soup? In a saucepan add 1 quart of homemade bone broth, 2 cups of full-fat coconut milk, a 1-inch piece of fresh ginger minced, juice from 1 lemon, a quarter teaspoon of red chilli flakes, a handful of fresh cilantro, 2 teaspoons of coconut oil and sea salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste. Simmer the soup for 7 minutes and serve hot.

Primal Cuts on Lansdowne sells frozen bones to make homemade bone broth.

The natural sweetness in coconut demands a wine with equal sweetness. Off-dry Riesling is an absolutely perfect partner for this soup. The wine’s sweetness will also nicely contrast the spiciness and heat from the turmeric and chilli flakes.

Tawse Quarry Road Organic Riesling, (CSPC 198853), $24.50, offers classic nectarine and citrus aromas and flavours with decent weight to stand up to the fattiness of full fat coconut milk. The wine’s medium sweetness will complement the soup and offset its spicy heat.
