Celebrating 50 years on ice
Norwood Minor Hockey Association, Norwood and District Figure Skating Club planning golden anniversary events later this year
The Norwood Minor Hockey Association and the Norwood and District Figure Skating Club are both important activities in the lives of many Asphodel-Norwood area youths and it has been that way for the last half a century.
Both groups celebrate their 50th year in Asphodel-Norwood in 2018 and plans are in the works to celebrate their golden anniversary.
In late November and early December 2018 there are plans to have a host of events including alumni games with past players, a Boston Bruins alumni game, current teams playing, a battle of the blades etc.
Several sponsors have already come forward with their support and the organizers are on the hunt to track down past players and skaters as well as footage and photos of past games and skating events. Contact Greg Hartwick at the Community Centre for more information 705-639-2342.
Alpha returns to the area
Last year the Norwood Pentecostal Church acquired the former Havelock Pentecostal Tabernacle building, 30 George Street in the neighbouring community of Havelock and launched an ambitious plan to transform the space into a centre for community based activities and programs. A great deal of their focus will be centred on youth activities; a partnership with the local schools has created the opportunity for a variety of after school programs. Possible other programs may feature classes in music, cooking, etc. While work on the building and future programing is still in progress the new “Havelock Centre” will be hosting the return of an Alpha program on Sunday starting at 6 p.m.
For those of you unfamiliar with the program Alpha is a weekly series of friendly interactive gatherings that explores the basics of the Christian Faith. Each session studies a different issue and is designed to create conversation and open discussion. If you have ever wondered about the “Big Question’s” in life such as: Is this all there is? Why am I here? What is my purpose? Alpha creates the space and opportunity space to explore these and more of life’s big question’s” in a safe, relaxed and friendly environment.
All Alpha sessions begin with a complimentary meal, after all it’s a great way to connect, relax and build friendships and simply put, there is nothing better than good food to bring people together. The meal is followed with a little humour, a short talk and then time for discussion or simply just listening (there is no pressure to talk).
The Alpha program is offered absolutely free of charge and all are welcome to attend and you are invited to come explore and see just what you can discover. For more information call 705639-2248 and ask for Liz.

Dennis Carter-Edwards will be the guest speaker and he is promising to include details in his talk about the Scoundrels and Scandals that took place during the construction of the canal system. Admission is free and all are welcome.
