Glen Gauthier, who grew up in Peterborough, was named Tuesday as a co-nominee for a BAFTA at the British Academy Film Awards for his sound work on the movie The Shape of Water.

Gauthier, who attended Prince of Wales Public School and Kenner Collegiate while growing up in Peterborough, has had a long career in movie and television production in Toronto and has previously won Genie and Gemini awards in Canada.

A sound mixer, Gauthier is nominated along with Christian Cooke, Nathan Robitaille and Brad Zoern in the film sound category for their work with director Guillermo del Toro on the dark fantasy drama The Shape of Water, which was filmed in Toronto.

They are up against the sound crews for Baby Driver, Blade Runner 2049, Dunkirk and Star Wars: The Last Jedi for the award, which is the British equivalent of the Oscar and sometimes a predictor of how the Oscar race will go.

Gauthier, who worked previously on del Toro’s robot epic Pacific Rim, said the director is notorious for layering his films with visuals elements that require him to create a richer of soundscape.

“There was always running water and steam pipes and lots of visual effects that create a lot of noise,” Gauthier told David Friend of the Canadian Press.

Gauthier moved to Toronto when he was around 18 but still has many family members in Peterborough, including his brother.
