Petes deal Tammela’s rights to Hounds

- EXAMINER STAFF

The Peterborough Petes have swung another trade deal ahead of Tuesday’s OHL overage trade deadline.

The Petes announced Tuesday they have dealt the rights to overage Finnish forward Jonne Tammela to the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds in exchange for a conditional 15th round 2018 draft pick.

Tammela, 20, was injured while playing for the Petes as an import early in the 2016-17 season and is still recovering from knee surgery.

He is drafted by the NHL’s Tampa Bay Lightning and has been rehabbing on the injured reserve with the AHL’s Syracuse Crunch. It’s possible if he does resume play this season that he could be assigned to the Ontario Hockey League for his final junior season.

The OHL trade deadline for overagers was noon Tuesday.

The Petes are standing pat on their three overager slots with captain Logan DeNoble, assistant captain and defenceman Alex Black and leading scorer Nikita Korostelev and their two import roster spots are taken up by rookie Russian defenceman Gleb Babintsev and Czech forward Matyas Svoboda.

The OHL trade deadline is noon Wednesday. On Monday, the Petes shipped Jonathan Ang, who had been the team’s leading scorer for most of the season, to the Sarnia Sting, for younger scoring forward Brady Hinz and two draft picks.

Tammela was drafted by the Petes in the 2015 import draft but opted to remain playing pro in Finland for the 2015-16 season. He only played two regular season games with the Petes in 2016-17, scoring a goal, before his seasonending injury.

A native of Ylivieska, Finland, Tammela is 5’10” and 186 pounds and can play both wing positions.

He was drafted by the Lightning in the fourth round, 118th overall, in the 2015 NHL draft.

He won a silver medal with Team Finland at the 2015 U18 tournament.

The Greyhounds are dominating the OHL this season at 34-32-1 for 71 points, 15 points ahead of both the Hamilton Bulldogs and the Sting.

The Hounds, whose general manager is former Pete Kyle Raftis, have been stockpiling for a potential Memorial Cup run by acquiring veterans Taylor Raddysh, who captained Team Canada to the world junior championship gold medal earlier this month, and defenceman Jordan Sambrook from the Erie Otters over the weekend.

NOTE: The London Knights have acquired the second round pick of the Peterborough Petes in the 2018 OHL draft as part of a package of picks they received for trading Sam Miletic to the Niagara IceDogs on Tuesday. Niagara had received that pick a year ago in the deal that brought forward Chris Paquette to the Petes.
