Snofest on the hill in East City

- ALEXSANDRA THOMPSON alexsandra_thompson@yahoo.com

The annual Snofest winter carnival returns to Ashburnham, with activities scheduled for Saturday. All events are free, except where noted.

Most events, unless noted, take place at the Peterborough Museum and Archives, 300 Hunter St. E., on top of Armour Hill.

The Mayor’s Pancake Breakfast, 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Hosted and prepared by the East Peterborough Lions Club. Enjoy pancakes, sausages, coffee and hot chocolate.

Outdoor Children’s Activities and Face Painting, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Kids can enjoy fun outdoor games, led by students in the recreation and leisure program at Fleming College.

Warm Up to your Museum

Warm up inside the museum and get your face painted. Museum educators are on hand to guide children through a variety of hands-on crafts and activities.

While you are there, check out the Northern Owls exhibit, on loan from the Royal Ontario Museum. Find out all about owls and see it before or after your experience at the Birds of Prey event running at the same time.

Birds of Prey, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

As mentioned in last week’s column, The Ontario Falconry Centre will be on site with 12 to 14 birds including owls, eagles and hawks. This is the first of two visits tied into the Northern Owls exhibit on at the museum.

Handlers will have demonstrations of the birds and later you can get a closer look at the birds at the meet and greet. Donations to this event are welcome.

Sleigh Rides, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Take the family for a ride on a horse-drawn wagon. This event depends in the weather.

Snofest Chili Contest, 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Presented by the Kiwanis Club Scott’s Plains, this chili contest is a Snofest favourite. Judging happens at 12:30 p.m.

Spaghetti Dinner

As part of Snofest activities, St. Luke’s Anglican Church open the doors wide for their community spaghetti dinner.

The event happens Saturday from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Cost is $2. St Luke’s is located at 566 Armour Rd.

At the Guild

The Peterborough Theatre Guild presents Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, written by Christopher Durang.

This Chekhov-inspired comedy is an updated examination of a nutty family of middle-aged siblings, one of whom brings a boytoy into their New England family estate.

Run dates are Jan. 19 to Feb. 3, with matinees slated for Jan. 21 and 28 at 2 p.m.

Admission is $20 for adults; $18 for seniors and $11 for students. Tickets are available online at http://theatreguild.org/plays/ vanya-sonia-masha-spike/ or through the PTG box office at 705-745-4211.
