It’s business as usual for Carillion Canada
Area highways will continue to be plowed as usual, an official stated – including those maintained by Carillion Canada, the firm whose parent company in Britain went bankrupt on Tuesday.
Cody Johnstone, a spokesman for Carillion Canada, stated in a press release that it’s business as usual in Canada for this subsidiary of Carillion, the British construction and state contracting giant that is now insolvent.
Johnstone stated that Carillion Canada, which is contracted to plow some provincial roads in the Kawarthas area, is not in liquidation and its 6,000 employees in Canada continue to be paid, along with its subcontractors and suppliers.
In an interview with the Canadian Press, Johnstone added that the Canadian leadership team is looking at how to ensure continuity of operations after the parent company’s decision to go into compulsory liquidation after weekend talks with creditors failed to get the short-term financing it needed to continue operating.
Carillion Canada, which does work such as construction, road maintenance and snowplowing, has a location on Highway 7 in the Springville area. No one was available for comment from the location on Wednesday.
City of Peterborough CAO Allan Seabrooke said the city doesn’t do business with Carillion Canada. Neither does Peterborough County, said public works director Chris Bradley.
Meanwhile Carillion Canada does snowplowing along Highway 7 west of Peterborough in the Lindsay area.
A release from the office of Minister of Transportation Steven Del Duca states that the minister met with officials from the firm on Wednesday and was told that winter maintenance would continue uninterrupted on provincial highways.
“Regardless, MTO is continuing to look at all of its options should this situation change,” states the release.
“We will be meeting with Carillion Canada throughout this week and we will continue to provide updates to the travelling public as they become available.”
