Burke joining Stand With Tim overnight effort for homelessness
Another brave soul is joining two others in spending a night on a street corner to help Peterborough’s homeless.
Tim Burke is a board member of Peterborough Cares, an umbrella organization that raises funds for local charities.
He’s joining Peterborough Cares founder Camille Parent and Deputy Police Chief Tim Farquharson in their bid to stand on the street downtown all night on Jan. 26.
Farquharson and Parent previously announced they will be spending 12 hours on George and King Streets, from 4 p.m. until 4 a.m. on Jan. 26, to collect donations for local shelters.
Now Burke says he’s joining them in the event they’re calling #standwithtim.
“It has to be done,” Burke said. “This segment of our population is overlooked. We can challenge ourselves to say we’re not going to overlook homelessness – we’re going to help.”
Burke said the city has donated several huge recycling bins for people to donate items of warm clothing – new or used – as well as personal hygiene items for the homeless on Jan. 26.
They’re also collecting cash donations, and contributions can be made online through a GoFundMe campaign at https://www.gofundme. com/fvbk6u-peterborough-cares
Donations will go to YES Youth and Family Shelter, Brock Mission and the Warming Room.
There’s also another opportunity to give: Burke said Peterborough Cares will collect donations at the Petes game on Thursday night at the Memorial Centre.
Peterborough Cares will have a booth in the lobby of the Memorial Centre during the game where they will collect cash, clothing or personal hygiene items for the homeless.
Burke also said that Dairy Queen is donating 100 game tickets that evening to people currently staying at local emergency shelters.
Bell is a game sponsor and Burke said the company will be donating Bell tuques to Peterborough Cares for people in need.
