Artist explores the beauty of stillness
The Beauty of Stillness show featuring still life and interiors by member artists will have its opening reception at the Kawartha Artists’ Gallery and Studio on Sunday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., with refreshments and artists present.
Artist Jane Armstrong will have several of her paintings on display.
“Eight years ago I decided to try painting, since three generations of my family already had their art hanging at our cottage,” she says.
Armstrong’s primary medium is acrylics, but she also works in pastels, watercolours and oils. Her subject matter ranges from people, water, and animals to still life. She studied Fine Art at the University of Windsor, but switched to Communication and Design at the Ontario College of Art and Design (OCAD) to pursue a career in advertising.
“For the last three summers I have taken a week of classes at the Haliburton School of Art + Design, and have also attended several workshops,” she continues.
This year, Armstrong is taking on the publicity and advertising position on the gallery’s board.
“The Kawartha Artists’ Gallery and Studio offers an opportunity to practice art, meet and learn from other artists, and to attend workshops,” she says.
Armstrong was born in Toronto and grew up in Burlington. After attending OCAD, she worked for an ad agency in Hamilton, doing creative work. Later, she started her own advertising business which provided the flexibility for her to be at home with her two children. Last year she and her husband moved to Peterborough to be closer to their cottage north of Bancroft.
The show will continue until March 4 at the gallery, which is located at 420 O’Connell Rd. The gallery is open Wednesdays to Sundays, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., closed Monday and Tuesday. For more information, please call 705-741-2817 or visit www.kawarthaartists.org.
