Kids’ cordwood curling turns 50 this year

- PAT MARCHEN KEENE KeeneNews@nexicom.net

G-r-r-r-eat Scot! The Kids’ Cordwood Curling Bonspiel is 50 years old!

There should be a trophy for the Keene Lions Club for keeping it going so long, but they will be too busy handing out lunch and prizes to all the participants and trophies to the teams on March 31 at the arena in Keene. The action starts at 8 a.m.

Registration forms are at school and the Otonabee South Monaghan Township municipal office. If you do not have enough for a team the Lions will find teammates for you.

Teens interested in volunteering should call Peter Pogue, 2956748 or Marion DuMoulin, 2954693.

Hurry, hurry!

Phone scams

Const. Cassandra Jackson of the Peterborough OPP will be at the library in Keene to talk about Internet and phone safety and scams on Feb. 21 at 10 a.m. Call the library at 295-6814 before Feb. 14 to book your spot. The program is part of the Keene Library 55+ Program.

A while ago I started getting calls about the Windows computer I don’t have. Normally I’d say goodbye and hang up, but instead I tried a method I discovered years ago that stopped another agency from calling repeatedly. On that occasion I exclaimed, loudly and firmly, “TAKE MY NUMBER OFF YOUR LIST! TAKE MY NUMBER OFF YOUR LIST! TAKE MY NUMBER OFF YOUR LIST!” Saying it three times seemed to do the magic. They hung up and never called back.

So when it happened a few weeks ago, as soon as I heard the word “Microsoft” I said “TAKE MY NUMBER OFF YOUR LIST” three times after which the caller angrily told me to shut my mouth.

It’s fun to make them mad, but perhaps you should call the library and book your spot

A Farmer’s Diary

John Graham Weir was born in Otonabee in 1844 and kept daily journals from 1880 until 1925. They were donated to Trent Valley Archives. 1883 Jan. 25 Wrote a letter to George Read of Keene to have him forward the County Grant for our school to me. 1886 Jan. 22, Fri. We went for a drive to town. Very pleasant today but deep snow. We received two beautiful pictures as a gift with the “Weekly Witness” from Montreal and a handsome book entitled “His Sombre Rivals” as a gift from the Toronto Mail by sending two subscriptions at $1 each. 1887 Jan. 27, Thurs. We slept until nine o’clock this morning. After breakfast I went to town with a load of wood and was home at one o’clock. After dinner I took another load of wood to town and was home again at half past five. That large and beautiful house that the Rev. Mr. Beck built in Ashburnham was burnt at five o’clock this evening. 1887 Jan. 28 In the forenoon I took a load of wood to Gough the Clothier. In the afternoon Lovina and I went to town for a drive in the cutter. Very good day, not freezing very much but there is a cold wind from the south-west.
