City, Trent students partner for Official Plan pop-up events

- EXAMINER STAFF

City planning staff are collaborating with Trent University ecological design students for upcoming pop-up events where citizens can provide feedback on topics discussed in the growth management survey as part of the process of updating the Official Plan.

The pop-up events will take place from 9 to 11 a.m. on Wednesday at Trent University’s student centre atrium (west bank) and Wenjack Theatre lobby (east bank) and Feb. 14 at Lansdowne Place at 645 Lansdowne St. W and Peterborough Square at 340 George St. B.

The city received more than 1,300 responses for the latest in a series of online surveys that was available from Dec. 7 to Jan.1 8. Those who did not complete it will have another opportunity to do so at these events, organizers stated in a press release.

It asked questions such as: Do you want to see the city grow out (as in, more suburbs) or up (apartment buildings)? Do you want to see more public park space, or more private open space?

Another survey was conducted last August and September. It received 791 online responses and 150 in-person responses from Fleming College and Trent University students. A summary of the results from the previous survey is available online at www.peterborough.ca/planit

Additional pop-up events will be held in early March in collaboration with Trent students and locations to be announced at a later date and posted on the Official Plan Update website at www.peterborough.ca/planit.

The Official Plan is the blueprint for the city’s growth between now and 2041. By then, Peterborough’s population is expected to have reached 115,000 people (from roughly 81,000 now). Although the OP has been updated on occasion, it hasn’t had a complete overhaul since 1981.
