Thunder earn bye in boys high school hockey

Cobourg's St. Mary Thunder finished first in the Kawartha high school boys hockey league and will get a bye to the Kawartha championsh­ip tournament they will host on Feb. 27 in Cobourg.

The next six teams will participat­e in best-of-three playoff series to determine the other three teams for the Kawartha tournament.

The second-place Haliburton Redhawks will host the seventhpla­ce Adam Scott Lions for two games in Haliburton on Wednesday at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. If a third game is necessary it will be at the

Kinsmen Civic Centre on Thursday at 3:45 p.m.

The third-place St. Peter Saints will face the sixth-place Fenelon Falls Falcons starting 3:15 p.m. on Tuesday at the Kinsmen. Game 2 is 3:30 p.m. Thursday in Fenelon Falls. Game three, if necessary, is to be determined.

The fourth-place Campbellfo­rd Flames meet the fifth-place Lindsay Collegiate Spartans starting Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. in Campbellfo­rd. Game 2 is in Lindsay at 1 p.m. on Thursday with Game 3, if necessary, on Friday in Campbellfo­rd at a time to be determined.

The final three teams, in order, the Crestwood Mustangs, Holy Cross Hurricanes and Cobourg Collegiate Wolves, missed the playoffs. Crestwood finished in a three-way tie with Adam Scott and Fenelon Falls but were eliminated by a tie-breaking formula.

In the final regular season game on Thursday, St. Mary pounded Holy Cross 11-2. Nick Dilauro and Curt Courneyea scored for the Hurricanes. Isaac Kelly and Jacob Tinney scored hat tricks for St. Mary's while Josh Tinney had a pair of goals. Tyler George, Drew Clapperton and Dawson Williams also scored.
