Local astronomers to host meteorite night

- CAROLINE MCCONNELL NORTHCREST northcrest_column@yahoo.ca

The Peterborough Astronomical Association (PAA) meets Friday at 7 p.m. at the Rotary Education Centre Guest Services Building at the Riverview Park and Zoo.

This meeting features a talk by geologist and mineralogist, Dr. Graham Wilson, of Turnstone Geological Services, Campbellford entitled, Meteorites and the Evolution of the Solar System. Wilson, a renowned specialist in the study and classification of meteorites, will give a short, colourful review that will serve as an introduction to meteorites and their parent bodies.

“This talk is not one to be missed, because the only thing rarer than a meteorite, is the opportunity to learn about them from an expert in meteoritics!” says Rick Stankiewicz, PAA Publicity Director.

Following the main presentation, stay for Sky This Month and learn about the locations of the planets of the solar system.

The program for beginners in astronomy, held before the main presentation, is currently on hold, but stay tuned for future updates.

This is an all ages event and the venue is barrier free. Everyone is welcome. Come out, check out the PAA and all it has to offer, at no cost. New members are always welcome.

“You don’t need a telescope to belong, but a curious mind helps,” says Stankiewicz.

Naturalists

The Peterborough Field Naturalists’ (PFN) bi-annual outing to Amherst Island takes place Sunday. Amherst Island is located at the eastern end of Lake Ontario, near Kingston. Participants will cross to the island on the ferry and visit various locations to look for wintering owls and other hawks and eagles which may be present. The trip will be led by PFN member Martin Parker, and assisted by Mark Read of the Kingston Field Naturalists who is very familiar with the island and its winter visitors.

Those interested in attending should meet at 6:45 a.m. at the Tim Hortons parking lot on Lansdowne St. at Sobeys/Canadian Tire. The group will carpool and leave at 7 a.m. to take the 9:30 a.m. ferry to the island. Bring a packed lunch, binoculars and telescope if you have one. Wear clothes suitable for the weather forecast.

PFN meets monthly at the Camp Kawartha Environment Centre at Trent University the second Wednesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. New members are welcome.
