- JOANNE CULLEY SPECIAL TO THE EXAMINER joanne.culley@sympatico.ca

The opening reception for the Small Treasures art show and fundraiser for the Best of High School Art will be on March 11 from 1 to 4 p.m., with refreshments and artists present. On display will be artwork that is 8” x 10”, which can be purchased with a ticket costing $30, on sale throughout the show. Tickets are limited to 60, the number of paintings on exhibit. The tickets will be drawn on Sunday, March 25 and ticket holders can select the painting of their choice in the order they are drawn. All proceeds will go to the awards given out at the Best of High School Art show this May. KAGS member artist Sue Sidney’s painting Winter Solo 1 will be on display. “My favourite medium is transparent watercolour, although lately I have been working more with acrylics,” she says. “I like to experiment with various media including pen and ink, conte, graphite, Primsa pencil, charcoal, pastel and occasionally scratchboard.” Sydney likes to paint landscapes and animal portraits, and also enjoys creating florals, mechanicals, still lifes and abstracts. Sydney has been the treasurer at KAGS for eight years, and this year she looks after shows and scheduling. When asked why she likes to create art, she says it gives her the opportunity to share the beauty around her with others, whether it is a sunrise or an underwater wreck. Sidney’s advice to budding artists is to “never stop learning and don’t be afraid to explore a new medium or to move out of your comfort zone to try something like pottery or soap stone sculpture.” The show will continue until March 25 at the gallery, which is located at 420 O’Connell Rd. The gallery is open Wednesdays to Sundays, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The gallery will be closed Friday March 30 and Sunday, April 1.
