Irish Concert

Get into the mood for St. Patrick’s Day at the Irish music concert fundraiser for St. John the Baptist Anglican Church’s 7th mission to Guatemala. The concert, that takes place Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the church, 81 Queen St. Lakefield, features local musicians Saskia Tomkins and Oisin Hannigan, an award-winning mother and son duo who play the fiddle, bodhran (Irish drum), viola, nyckelharpa, and a host of other instruments. You can listen to a sample of their music at www.saskiatomkins.com. Tickets cost $20 and are available from the church office Mon., Wed. and Fri. mornings or from team members. They will also be available to purchase at the door if there are any left. The mission trip to Parramos, Guatemala, where the mission team will partner with the Arms of Jesus Children’s Mission, takes place in July. The mission team consists of approximately 15 members, many from St. John's but also a number from other local churches. Team members pay their own accommodation and travel expenses. Fundraising efforts by the group go toward purchasing medical supplies, clothing and blankets to take and purchasing and building simple pre-fabricated houses to replace structures made of bundled cornstalks. Each one of these simple replacement houses costs $1,800. If you would like to help with this effort, consider making a donation. Everything helps from a few dollars to the cost of an entire house. The donation of an entire house can be made in memory of a loved one or to mark a particular event or celebration. For anyone choosing this option, the house is presented to the local family with a commemorative certificate which will be proudly displayed on the wall of their new home. Donations can be dropped off at the church office on Mon. Wed. or Fri. mornings or mailed to St. John’s Anglican Church, 81 Queen St., Selwyn, K0L2H0. Cheques should be made out to St. John’s Anglican Church with ‘Guatemala Mission’ written in the memo line. Mark the envelope to the attention of Sandra Peacock, team treasurer, so your donation can be recorded for a charitable tax receipt.
