Whitby Steelhawks hand Timbermen third straight loss

- EXAMINER STAFF

Peterborough Timbermen suffered their third straight loss, 13-10 to the Whitby Steelhawks, in Oshawa Saturday night. It was their second straight loss to Whitby who beat them 17-16 eight days earlier. As has been the case through parts of the season, the Timbermen were shorthanded. For various reasons, eight regulars and two assistant coaches were absent including three top scorers and three top defencemen. “With low numbers it was tough out there,” Joe Wasson said. The Timbermen gained an early 4-0 lead but the Steelhawks fought back and cut the lead to 5-3 after the first quarter. It was all Whitby in the second as they outscored Peterborough 5-0 for an 8-5 half-time lead. Each team was held to a single goal in the third quarter as they battled on special teams. Mark Vradenburg and Dan Michel got the Timbermen within a goal at 9-8 but the Steelhawks popped four in a row including goals 33 seconds apart to clinch it. All seven teams will make the playoffs. First place will have a bye to the semifinals while second place will play seventh, third will play sixth and fourth will play fifth. All playoff games are single-elimination. Vradenburg led the Timbermen with three goals and three assists, Cole McWilliams and Michel had two goals and two assists, Zack Thompson and Cam Garlin had a goal and two assists and Matt MacLeod a goal and assist. Kaleb Bingley, Joe Wasson, Justin Kulla and Nick Karam had assists. Peterborough native Cam Milligan had a goal and eight assists for Whitby. The Timbermen have three regular season games left, starting Saturday versus the St. Catharines ShockWave at the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena. All three junior Peterborough Timbermen squads won championships on Saturday. The U13's won 7-4, U18’s 9-8 and tU22's 8-5 against Six Nations Snipers juniors.
