Birds and bees the focus of Lakefield gardening meeting

Spring is around the corner, and the Lakefield Horticultu­ral Society is offering an event to inspire gardeners for the season. Susan Chan will speak at 7 p.m. on March 13 at the Marshland Centre in Lakefield on Pollinator Garden Design.

She will talk about the importance of pollinator­s like bees, butterflie­s, and birds, and offer advice on attracting them to your garden. Non-members are welcome. For more informatio­n, call Marjut at 705-877-3588.

Lakefield Legion

Yorkshire pudding. Tickets are $15 in advance (by Wednesday prior) or $18 at the door. Reserve your advance tickets by calling 705-652-7988.

On March 17, the Branch will host a St. Patrick’s Day party beginning at 4:30 p.m. with live music in an open mic format with backup band and sound system provided. Food (Irish stew and chili) will be available for purchase. Wear your St. Paddy’s finery. This is an age of majority event with free admission, downstairs in the clubroom. Branch 77 hosts a weekly Bingo every Tuesday night for those 18 and over. Cards go on sale at 6 p.m. with calling starting promptly at 7 p.m.. There are total prizes of $1,050 (not including the jackpot). There is also a Jackpot ($1,000) if won in 55 numbers or less. Snacks and nonalcohol­ic drinks are available for purchase. Bingo is upstairs in the main hall and wheelchair accessible.

The branch will hold an Easter Turkey Spin on March 24 from 2 to 4 p.m. Buy a ticket for a toonie for a chance to win a turkey, ham or prize from the prize table. This is an age of majority event, downstairs in the clubroom. Call 705 652-7988 for more informatio­n.

Selwyn Public Library

The Selwyn Public Library will offer a sign and pillow-making workshop on March 28 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Bridgenort­h Library.

You can make your own pillow or sign to take home, choosing from multiple designs. Registrati­on is $60 per person, and a portion of each ticket will support Selwyn Public Library Children’s Programmin­g. This fundraiser is a partnershi­p with Trinkets and Treasures store in Lakefield. Registrati­on is required.

Lakefield Singers

The Lakefield Singers are open to new members for their spring 2018 season. This group is a welcoming mixed chorus of all ages, abilities and experience.

Music reading is not a prerequisi­te. They will meet on Wednesdays from 6:45 to 8:15 p.m. at the Lakefield United Church, located at 47 Regent Street, from March 28 to June 13. Registrati­on for the spring session is $70 per person. For more informatio­n, phone Gail at 705-652-7892.

Performing Arts Lakefield

PAL presents the Prisoner of Tehran, starring Marina Nemat with the Motus O Dance Theatre. The concert will start at 7:30 p.m. on Mar. 23 at the Bryan Jones Theatre at Lakefield College School.

The doors will open at 7 p.m. and tickets will cost $30 for adults and $20 for students.
