Petes scout room honours Dalliday
The tears came quickly for veteran broadcaster Gary Dalliday.
He choked up during a Tuesday morning ceremony that saw the Peterborough Petes officially name their media/scout room after him.
“It’s a real honour,” Dalliday said.
Last month, Peterborough learned that Dalliday, who once played for the Petes, has been diagnosed with cancer for the third time. He found out in December, but made the news public in the lead up to the Pink in the Rink event he and his son
Pete co-chaired, along with teenaged cancer survivor Tori Sotiriadis.
The event went on to raise more than $83,000 for cancer research.
“There is no bigger supporter of the Petes organization than Gary Dalliday,” said vice-president of the Petes, Ken Jackman.
Dalliday, 76, served as the sports director at CHEX-TV for 35 years and, along with his son Pete, served as the Petes’ radio voice for 15 seasons. He is the Petes’ current media/scout room host, alongside Don Barrie. It was Barrie who brought the idea of renaming the room to the board of directors. The board unanimously approved the plan.
“I’m going to look forward to next season and, God willing, I fully intend to be here for the Petes’ season opener next year,” Dalliday said.
The media/scout room is located on the fourth floor of the Peterborough Memorial Centre.
A plaque has been posted there with George Elliott’s sketches of Dalliday for his Peterborough and District Sports Hall of Fame portrait.
Dalliday will be picking the winning ticket in the annual Peterborough and District Sports Hall of Fame vehicle draw at Saturday night’s Petes game.
