A Peterborough County man who chased a coyote with his snowmobile on Stoney Lake has been fined a total of $3,000.
Robert Little pleaded guilty March 8 to offences under the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act and Motorized Snow Vehicles Act in Ontario Court of Justice in Peterborough
Justice of the Peace Jason Mariasine fined Little $1,500 for using a vehicle to pursue wildlife; $500 for driving a snowmobile without a permit; $500 for driving a snowmobile without valid insurance; and $500 for failing to wear a proper helmet while driving a snowmobile, according to a release from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry.
Court heard that on Jan. 4 a conservation officer from the ministry responded to a complaint that a man with a child on a snowmobile was chasing a coyote on Stoney Lake, northeast of Peterborough.
The complainant had observed the man chasing the coyote for about five minutes, the release states.
Little drove fast to catch up to the animal, following right behind it and driving ahead of it to cut it off, the release states.
Little was also driving the snowmobile without proper permit validation, valid insurance or a helmet, the investigation determined.
