Selwyn and CEDI

On Feb. 15 and 16, representatives from Curve Lake First Nation, Hiawatha First Nation, Selwyn Township, Otonabee South-Monaghan Township, County of Peterborough, Peterborough and the Kawarthas Economic Development and Sustainable Peterborough attended a workshop to learn more about each other and how to collaborate on projects.

The workshop included presentations from each organization where they provided background and shared ways in which they believe they could work together in the future.

This workshop is part of the Community Economic Development Initiative (CEDI) program. CEDI is a joint initiative coordinated through the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) and Cando; a national, membership-based, non-profit Aboriginal organization involved in community economic development with Aboriginal communities. The CEDI program’s goal is to support municipal and indigenous neighbours in creating and implementing joint community economic development initiatives.

Another goal is to educate and provide awareness to the purpose and role of First Nation’s Consultation protocol when it comes to development within the Treaty 20 area. This will enhance the working relationship between municipalities and First Nations communities as they learn to better support, collaborate and work with one another on future projects.

Over the next three years the First Nations and municipalities will continue to attend workshops in which they will begin to collaborate on a project of shared interest.
