Standing heron, standing lady classes to be held this weekend

- JOANNE CULLEY SPECIAL TO THE EXAMINER joanne.culley@sympatico.ca

The Artisans Centre, 993 Talwood Dr., is offering two workshops from Sudbury’s Powertex Canada.

The Standing Heron class takes place on Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and the Standing Lady class takes place on March 24 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sunday, March 25 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. You can register for these workshops at the Kawartha Potter’s Guild gallery or online at www.artisanscentre.ca.

“You will learn to create an amazing sculpture for your home or garden using the Powertex textile hardener,” says Anne Carling, organizer.

All materials are supplied, and students are requested to wear old shoes and clothing and to bring a bag lunch. No special sewing or other skills are required. Squares and rectangles of cloth are cut, dipped in the Powertex textile medium, then applied to the armature. The fabric is adjusted and layers of cloth added, along with details such as ribbon roses, straw hats and lace which will be provided. However, if you have a doily or other cloth with sentimental value, it could become part of your sculpture.

Canoe Museum and beer

Last month, Marty Laskaris, co-founder and president of the Publican House Brewery, presented Carolyn Hyslop, general manager of the Canadian Canoe Museum, with a cheque for $7,289, raised from the sale of Paddler’s Ale, a beer developed by the brewery last year.

A portion of every can sold goes towards the museum’s move to their new waterfront location on the Trent-Severn Waterway.

“We are grateful to partner with Publican House Brewery,” says Hyslop. “Paddler’s Ale has become a favourite at museum events including our Silver Canoe Receptions, volunteer potlucks and our annual Beaver Club Gala.”

More than 5,000 students in eight countries have taken “virtual” field trips to the museum since the program was developed two years ago.

Students from countries including India, Sri Lanka, Viet Nam, and the UK explored Canada’s fur trade and learned about the Indigenous origins of birch bark canoes, cedar dugouts and more.
