Arthur Cup for rowers Adair, Kelly
Trent Excalibur rowers Abigail Adair and Dayton Kelly were named the recipients of the Arthur Cup at Trent’s 49th Annual Awards Ceremony on Tuesday night at the Trent Athletics Centre.
The Arthur Cup is awarded to the university’s most well-rounded male and female athlete, based on contributions both on and off the field.
Adair, a math and chemistry student, won bronze at the OUA championships in women’s 8+ and also competed in the Canadian University Rowing Championships in 2016-17.
She has served as president of the Trent University Rowing Club for the past two years, led the Head of Trent planning committee, organized the Row for Heart campaign in conjunction with the Heart and Stroke Foundation, and sat on the Varsity Supports Varsity board, promoting communication between varsity sport programs and the community.
Kelly, a biomedical science major, has competed at the Canadian University Rowing Championships for the past three seasons, twice making the finals in both lightweight 4+ and heavyweight 8+, as well as recording a third-place finish in heavyweight 8+.
He has been a representative on the board for the Trent Rowing Club the past three seasons, acting as a liaison between the Trent Rowing Club and the Peterborough Rowing Club. He has also helped implement the annual Trent Athletics Golf Tournament. He is also the recipient of the Rob de Jong Volunteerism Award this year.
The winner of the Gary Wolff Leadership Award, presented each year to a student athlete who has demonstrated determination and leadership through balancing sport, community involvement and academic performance, was Reagan MacDonald of the rugby team.
MacDonald was Trent University Rugby Team Council president for 2016-17 and 2017-18.
She has also volunteered her time over the past four seasons with the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board developing and running after-school rugby programs such as learn rugby days and organizing high school tournaments.
She has also been a member of the Varsity Supports Varsity club for the past three seasons and has organized women’s rugby recruits and co-ordinated the women’s rugby strength and conditioning programs.
The recipient of the Community Betterment Award is Paige Spurgeon and the Excalibur women’s soccer team.
A second-year goalkeeper for the women’s soccer team, Spurgeon has led the varsity athletes in the Bras for a Cause initiative, supporting breast cancer awareness as well as helping initiate a fundraiser for the Warming Room in Peterborough.
She was also instrumental in advocating for student athletes to volunteer time with the local organization.
