City community services director Ken Doherty is about to retire.

Doherty has worked for the city of Peterborough for 30 years; his last day of work will be May 4.

There will be a retirement party on the afternoon of June 8 at Market Hall, he said.

Doherty started as manager of the Peterborough Museum in 1988, and then did a series of management jobs in arts and culture — as well as at the library — before taking the job as director of community services 14 years ago.

Over the years, Doherty has also served on various provincial and national arts and culture committees.

He was president of the Ontario Museum Association in 1989, for example, and chairman of the Policy Forum of Associations of Museums and Art Galleries in Canada in that same year.

Doherty was also a part-time teacher at Fleming College.

In his announcement to city staff, Doherty wrote that he’s worked in municipal government for a total of 38 years and feels it’s time to retire.

“While I have been planning it for some time, I never realized how hard it would be to pick a date,” he wrote.

City CAO Allan Seabrooke wrote in a letter that now Doherty will have more time for his passions: travel, cycling and visiting family and friends.

Seabrooke added that Doherty’s influence on city programs and facilities has made life better for many citizens.

“He will be missed for his strong leadership, quick wit and humour,” Seabrooke wrote. “I thank Ken for all his contributions and for making our city a better place to live.”
