Cafe offers gardening workshops for spring

- CAROLINE MCCONNELL Northcrest_column@yahoo.ca

When days get warmer, the gardeners among us start to dream about working in the garden. The Seasoned Spoon Café at Trent University is offering two gardening workshops, Square Foot Gardening and Composting: Spoils into Soils to whet those gardening appetites.

Square Foot Gardening, with master gardener Gladys Fowler, takes place Monday night from 5 until 7 p.m. If you are eager to have a garden, but are short on space, this is the workshop for you where you will learn all about this technique of growing more in less space with minimal effort.

“Perfect for urban gardeners, the space challenged and anyone who wants to intensify production or experiment with efficiency.”

Composting: Spoils into Soils takes place April 4 from 5:30 until 7:30 p.m.

In this workshop, Robin Tench, local compost enthusiast, will give a hands-on presentation about composting techniques to suit any situation. Learn what you should and should not compost, how to build and maintain a bin or pile, and how to harvest and use your custom-made compost. You will also be able to meet working worms that create compost indoors.

“No garden is complete without a compost pile! Composting recycles your kitchen and yard waste into rich soil for your garden, yard, and houseplants.”

Each workshop costs $5 or pay what you can. The Seasoned Spoon is located at 1600 West Bank Dr. For further information email spoonvolunteers@gmail.com
