Peterborough photographers ready for SPARK
The opening reception of the SPARK Photo Festival show at the Kawartha Artists’ Gallery and Studio takes place on Sunday, April 8 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., with refreshments and photographers and artists present. KAGS members will be showcasing their photographic art and original art from a photo reference.
Doug Ingram will have some of his photographs on display.
“I love to create pictures,” says Ingram. “As the well-known Canadian photographer Freeman Patterson has said, you don't ‘take’ a picture, you ‘make’ a picture, and that's where the fun is.”
Ingram began to photograph when at the age of 20 when he was given a 35 mm camera at Christmas.
“I took many beautiful slides of landscapes over the years, which were followed by many family photos as my children grew and reached certain milestones,” he continues.
“That first camera was succeeded by a better one, with a variety of lenses. But in the days of film cameras, one was always limited by the size of each roll of film, and the cost of developing. With the onset of digital cameras, all that changed, and the field has exploded. About 15 years ago I moved into digital photography, and have been enjoying its endless possibilities.”
Ingram does landscape, some travel and street photography. But he says that probably his favorite subject matter is people, especially children.
He is for most part self-taught, but recently he has branched out, taking photographic courses including at the Haliburton School of Art + Design, with National Geographic, and recently a local workshop given by Bill Lockington.
Ingram joined KAGS over a year ago at the prompting of his wife, Theresa Morris, who is an accomplished painter, and he shows his photos there from time to time.
The show will continue until May 3 at the gallery, which is located at 420 O’Connell Rd. The gallery is open Wednesdays to Sundays, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., closed Good Friday and Easter Sunday. For more information, please call 705-741-2817, visit www.kawarthaartists.org, or like them on Facebook.
Canadian Cancer Society
The Canadian Cancer Society Peterborough is looking for 100 volunteers to sell daffodil pins from April 5 to April 7 during Daffodil Month.
“When loved ones are diagnosed with or die of cancer, friends and family often want to do something to help or honour them. This April, the Canadian Cancer Society Peterborough and District community office wants everyone to know that this is their opportunity to make a difference,” says Allison Payne, senior manager.
Money raised during Daffodil Month helps local cancer patients and their families through life-saving cancer research, support services and other important work that means fewer Canadians will be affected by the disease.
Volunteers can register at www.cancer.ca/daffodil, email apayne@ontario.cancer.ca or call the office at 705-742-3823.
