Women donate $12,000 to Hospice Peterborough
Hospice Peterborough got a cheque for $12,000 from 100 Women Peterborough after the group held its inaugural meeting last Tuesday, officials said.
Hospice assists those living with life-threatening illness and grief.
“We are absolutely delighted to have such a wonderful community of women who will help us make a positive impact on our clients and their families,” Hospice executive director Linda Sunderland stated in a press release. “We are truly honoured and thank 100 Women Peterborough for selecting us as the first recipient of your funding.”
The funds will help outfit the integrated arts space at the new Hospice Peterborough Care Centre, set to open in early 2019.
The room will offer children and their families a welcoming, safe and peaceful space where they can find comfort and strength to begin to heal through art, music, play therapy, mindful meditation and more, officials stated.
Organizers Wendy Hill, Catia Skinner, Alyssa Stewart and Rosalea Terry launched 100 Women Peterborough with the vision of helping local community causes. The group will meet as a group four times a year to select a non-profit organization in Peterborough to receive $10,000.
Hospice Peterborough is building its new care centre on Langton St., and has been relying on the Every Moment Matters fundraising campaign to help it through what turned into a complicated project.
The original plan had to be changed when serious issues were found in a Victorian home intended to be part of the centre. It was razed last year so construction could begin. The campaign had raised $8.5 million at that point.
When complete, the new centre will include two buildings: A 10-bed residence and offices for administration, programs and services.
The beds will be the first hospice beds in the city and county.
