Snowangels wraps up Public Energy’s season
Public Energy wraps up its 24th season this week with a world premiere of a work by one of Canada's most important South Asian choreographers, Deepti Gupta.
Snowangels is a performance for four dancers that explores our encounters with snow, using the storytelling tradition of Kathak, a type of classical Indian dance.
As indicated in a Public Energy press release, Gupta, an immigrant from India, “has always been fascinated by the magical transformations of the snow from snow angel to snow drift to snowflake.”
The performance features Arzoo Dance Theatre from Ottawa, and an original score by Nick Storring, drawing on contemporary music and the rhythms of Indian classical music. Performances take place Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. at Market Hall, Performing Arts Centre, 140 Charlotte St. Immediately following both performances will be a Question and Answer Period with the artists. Tickets are $23 for adults and $15 for students and are available by calling 705-749-1146 or visiting markethall.org.
Gupta will also be involved with two outreach activities. On Thursday, she is giving an Artist’s Talk on Decoding Classical Indian Dance and will discuss her practice and career as an artist, teacher and scholar. This free event takes place from 7 to 8 p.m. at Trent University’s Traill College, 310 London St. All are welcome. Gupta will also be teaching an Introduction to Kathak Dance Class, Saturday from 1:30 to 3 p.m. at the Market Hall. Tickets are $12 per person; please register in advance by emailing admin@publicenergy.ca.
