Guess the date the canoe will float, win a camp trip

- CAROLINE MCCONNELL

There’s a tethered canoe sitting on the ice on the lake at Camp Kawartha right now and if you can guess the date that it will float this spring, you can win a free camp session for a child in your life!

“Yes, the ice is still present, and there is lots of it, but at some point it will melt, and our canoe will float freely. Gauge the weather, watch the Weather Network, use your pet groundhog, but however you do it, pick a date, and send your best guess,” states a release for the contest.

The winner will receive a paid spot for Camp Kawartha’s Nature Camp (session N) that runs August 26-29. This four-day/ three-night co-ed camp is for young people between the ages of 7 and 14 years.

“This unique co-ed camp blends our highly regarded nature programming with recreation, adventure and games. The program is even endorsed by Ontario Nature!”

The value of the camp prize package is $595.

There is no fee to enter the contest and it is not a fundraiser. It will however, help to raise awareness about Camp Kawartha and its programs. The winner will be announced in the Camp

Kawartha May newsletter.

To enter, send your date estimate by email to philanthropy@campkawartha.ca with the subject line ‘My Best Guess’.

The 8th annual Red Pashmina Walk takes place Sunday, April 22 at Emmanuel East United Church, 534 George St. Proceeds from the walk will go to Canadian Women for Women in Afghanistan to support the education of women and girls in Afghanistan.

Registration for the walk takes place from 1 until 1:45 p.m.; the walk begins at 2 p.m. Bring your pledge sheets and money and wear your red pashmina!

The walk is an easy one. Participants will cross Hunter Street bridge, then walk along the trail towards Nichols Oval, returning over the London Street footbridge and back down Water Street. It is just under an hour in length and is suitable for strollers but not bikes as the walkers travel on city sidewalks when not on the trail.

There will be light refreshments following the walk, and a prize for the highest amount of money raised in pledges. There will also be time to shop for Afghan needlework, and Red Pashminas will be available for purchase.

Participants should bring a full reusable water bottle and dress comfortably for the weather.

To register for the walk and obtain a pledge sheet, contact Daphne at 705-656-3820 or Peterborough@cw4afghan.ca. For further information on Canadian Women for Women in Afghanistan visit www.cw4wafghan.ca.
