Garden show returning to Evinrude Centre

The 18th annual Peterborou­gh Garden Show will take place this weekend at the Evinrude Centre, 911 Monaghan Rd. It will be open Friday, April 13 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, April 14 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, April 15 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Presented by the Peterborou­gh Horticultu­ral Society and the Peterborou­gh and Area Master Gardeners, the event features over 100 vendors and exhibitors, with garden displays, garden lecturers, a children’s garden, and ongoing demonstrat­ions.

One of the largest garden shows in Ontario, the show features exhibits from many local nurseries, garden designers, garden art and sculpture, gardening clothes, garden magazines and books, plant-based creams and remedies, arborists, tools, seeds, and water features.

There will be representa­tives from organizati­ons such as the Peterborou­gh Community Garden Network, Peterborou­gh Green-Up, and more. The Master Gardeners will be on hand to answer any gardening questions. Food will be supplied by BE Catering.

Terra Edibles from Foxboro will be one of the exhibitors onsite. They offer over 100 varieties of organicall­y-grown seed for heirloom tomatoes, vegetables, herbs and flowers. Owners Karyn Wright and Don McKay will also have a selection of organic and locally-made products such as essential oils, lavender bath and spa products, teas, soaps, candles and more.

There will be garden talks throughout the show by experts: Saturday, April 14 at

10:30 a.m. Dianne & Gary Westlake present “What are Lawns Good for – Let’s Stop the Madness; 12 p.m. Jillian Bishop talks about “Urban Gardening and Seed Saving”; 1:15 p.m. Ken Brown presents “Vertical Vegetables”; and at 2:30 p.m.

Dan Cooper presents “Gardening from a Hammock.” On Sunday, April 15, the speakers will be: 10:30 a.m. Kathryn Pimmett with “Heritage Plants and Gardens”; 12 p.m. Garry Edwards and “Tales from a Victorian Garden”; 1:15 p.m. Sean James talks about “Working with Nature”; and 2:30 p.m. Gladys Fowler presents “Square Foot Gardening.”

During the show, members of the Peterborou­gh and Area Master Gardeners will present several workshops and demonstrat­ions upstairs at the Evinrude Centre. On Saturday April 14 workshops are: 11 a.m. “Container Gardening” by Deb Gordon; 12:15 p.m. “Soil, Let’s get Dirty” by Cheryl Harrison; 1:15 p.m. “Pollinator Nesting Sites” by Dianne Westlake; and 2:15 p.m. “Before you go to the Garden Centre: Things you should Know” by Margaret Higgins. On Sunday April 15 workshops are: 11 a.m. “Pruning” by Sue Flinders-Adams; 12:15 p.m. “Herb Gardening in Containers” by Rachel Burrows; 1:15 p.m. “Pollinator­s” by Beryl Harris; and 2:15 p.m. “Succulents and Fairy Gardens” by Beth Williams.

Money raised from the show goes to community beautifica­tion projects as well as scholarshi­ps in horticultu­ral-related studies.

Wipper Lecture

The annual Wipper lecture in memory of museum founder Kirk Wipper will take place on Wednesday, April 11 at 6:30 p.m. at the Canadian Canoe Museum, 910 Monaghan Rd. The speaker will be Geoff Green, founder and expedition leader of Canada C3. An Ottawa-based educator and adventurer, Green led the 150-day journey from Toronto to Victoria through the Northwest Passage on the Polar Prince, a re-purposed Coast Guard icebreaker, Green will talk about how canoes were important to the project.

Spring Muffin Party

A Spring Muffin Party will be held at St. James United Church, 221 Romaine St., on Wednesday, April 18, from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m., at a cost of $4 per person, with tickets available at the door.
