Climate change focus of talk

On April 19, Drew Monkman will be speaking at the Ennismore and District Horticultu­ral Society. Monkman will be speaking about climate change in the Kawarthas, growing wild flowers, trees, shrubs, and invasive species.

The April meeting will be a celebratio­n of the society’s 5th anniversar­y. There will be pot luck desserts and appetizers at 6:30 p.m. followed by the speaker. All meetings are held at 551 Ennis Road in Ennismore, in the lower level of the library in the Optimist Hall. Guests are welcome. Annual membership­s cost $20 per person or $25 per couple.

Lakefield Legion

Lakefield Legion Branch 77 presents its next Fabulous Friday Night Dinner this Friday at 5:30 p.m. at 10 Nicholls St. in Lakefield. The menu is to be announced. Advance tickets (by Wednesday prior) are $15 (or $18 at the door). Reserve your advance tickets by calling 705-652-7988.

Bridgenort­h United Church

There will be an all-you-can-eat Best Beef Dinner on Saturday from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the church. It will be a traditiona­l hot roast beef dinner with all the trimmings, including their famous home-made pies. Tickets cost $15 per person, $7 for children ages 5 to 13, and free for children aged 4 and under. Tickets are available at the church or Bell’s Garage on Ward

Street in Bridgenort­h, or at the door. Reservatio­ns may be made by calling 705-2929601. Take-out is also available.

Douro-Dummer Library Art Gallery

Photograph­er Nancy Towns will have an art show at the Library entitled, “Food: It moves us.” The show is on until April 30 (during regular library hours). The opening reception will be this Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the library, located at 435 Douro 4th Line. All are welcome. Nancy will also be an artist in residence at the library every Wednesday in April from 6 to 8 p.m. as part of the SPARK photo festival.

Lakefield Ladies Curling

On March 7, three Lakefield teams participat­ed in the Robert Young Bonspiel held at the Ennismore Curling Club. The team of Bea O’Connell, Linda Murney, Paula Graham and Kim Condon placed first in their draw. The team of Linda Parcels, Ferne Sage, Jane Brown and Ursula Clark tied for third with the team of Carol Kidd, Susan Sayer, Lois Cole and Barb McKee.

On March 14, the Flamingo Bonspiel was hosted by the Omemee Curling Club. The team of Carol Kidd, Susan Sayer, Bea O’Connell and Darlene Hockady won both of their games to place second in their draw.

The Ladies Open Bonspiel was held at the Norwood Curling Club on March 21. Three Lakefield teams attended. The team of Caron Kidd, Darlene Hockaday, Linda Kapron and Sharon Cooper took first place in their draw. Second place was claimed by the team of Lois Cole, Deb Shaw, Bev Thompson and Mary Hockaday. Susan Sayer, Wendy Fucile, Barb McKee and Deb Wiltshire took fourth place.

Also, on March 21, the Leads and Seconds Final Bonspiel was held at the Peterborou­gh Golf and Curling Club. The team of Deb O’Grady, Mary Jane Jackman, Gloria Shearer and Deb Nash placed second overall.

On March 27, the Annual Spring Fling was held at the Peterborou­gh Curling Club. Six teams from Lakefield competed. The team of Lois Cole, Deb Shaw, Karen Fry and Linda Kapron took second place in the first draw. The five other teams that participat­ed were: Linda Parcels, Kerry Schumacher, Karen Fawcett, Ursula Clark; Ferne Sage, Darlene Hockaday, Sharon Cooper, Catherine McInnis; Carol Kidd, Bea O’Connell, Deb Wiltshire, Deb Nash; Diane Horner, Fran Morton, Melodie Armitage, Mary Jane Jackman: Susan Sayer, Wendy Fucile, Kim Condon and Jayne White.
