Speaking students moving on

The Peterborou­gh Lions held their district competitio­n in the Effective Speaking contest Mar. 24. The students listed below placed first in their respective divisions and will move on to the final competitio­n planned for May 4 to May 6 in St. Catharines.

Youth English Sarah Black Grade 3 St. John's Catholic Elementary, Peterborou­gh; Junior English Frida Mills Grade 5 Dr. G.J. MacGillava­ry School Courtice Junior French Ava Feige Grade 6 Ecole Monsigneur - Jamot School, Peterborou­gh; Intermedia­te English Daymond Clark Grade 8 M.J. Hobbs School, Hampton; Intermedia­te French Elyse Rahiri Grade 9 Adam-Schott School, Peterborou­gh; Senior English Dhruv Pathak

Grade 10 Kenner C.V.I., Peterborou­gh.

They will be vying for grand prizes as follows: junior division, $500; Intermedia­te and senior divisions, $1,000. Good Luck to all.

Word on the Hill

The Word On the Hill series returns to the Peterborou­gh Museum and Archives and takes an in-depth look at Peter Robinson, the person.

Speaker for all three lectures is Marie O’Connor, who is a descendant of several Robinson immigrants.

In addition, O'Connor has been an educator as an elementary classroom teacher and as education officer and part-time archivist at the museum.

Here’s a look at what the lectures will feature.

The first talk is Apr. 22: Peter Robinson Profile of Peter Robinson and his Ancestors

The second talk happens April 29 and looks at Peter Robinson and His Descendant­s.

The final lecture happens May 6: Peter Robinson: An Honourable Gentleman

All sessions take place from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the museum in the multi-purpose classroom. The museum is located at 300 Hunter Street East, Museum Drive, Peterborou­gh.

Cost of a series pass is is $27.60 including taxes. Individual lecture rush tickets are $10 and available ten minutes before each lecture, available at the museum reception desk. Space is limited.

Babysittin­g Course Added

St. John Ambulance has added another date for their popular babysittin­g class. /home-alone course os set for April 20.

The class coincides with a P. A. day for students in the Kawartha Pine Ridge district school board.

The course is designed for youths 10 to 14 years old and provides training in first aid and leadership and provides them with the ability to handling a variety of situations.
