The sight of a red and white blood services van parked regularly outside the Norwood Town Hall is commonplace in the minds of many in the village, and for good reason; the Norwood Lions and Lioness Clubs have hosted blood donor clinics in the village for almost 18 years.

The latest successful clinic was hosted once again by the service clubs on March 31, collecting a total of 43 units of blood to help save the lives of a tremendous cross section of our population ranging from accident victims to people in the hospital and so on.

A wide variety of participants attended the March 31 clinic including some first time givers and many veteran donors; for one gentleman it was his 99th time giving blood. He said he will be at the next clinic in June to give for his 100th time.

The village’s housing boom and subsequent population increase has also helped the clinic with many new residents coming in to participate. The clubs host the clinics every three months at the town hall. The next one will be on June 30, more details to follow as the date approaches.

Horticultural Meeting

In preparation for the warmer weather, hopefully soon to be upon us, the Norwood and District Horticultural Society is hosting their next meeting on Monday at the Norwood Legion, 27 King St. (Doors open at 7, meeting starts at 7:30 p.m.)

The guest speaker will be Heather Treveld, who will be discussing the very relevant topic of permaculture. Loosely defined, permaculture is a type of sustainable and self-sufficient horticultural designs based on natural ecosystems. Guests are always welcome and your first meeting is free. Membership is $15 per year. The Society is also online at www.gardenontario.org/site.php/norwood

Coffee Hour

Norwood’s popular Community Outreach Christian Coffee Hour will host their next gathering on April 28 at 9:15 a.m. in the Millennium Room at the Community Centre (88 Alma St.)

The Christian Coffee hour is a non-denominational setting for people to gather together with friends for a time of worship, music and fellowship. There is also an indoor yard sale to browse (The proceeds are used to help the less fortunate. Donations of small items for the yard are always appreciated.)

As always there will be plenty of tasty goodies to nibble on; everyone is welcome. Future coffee hour dates include May 26 and June 23.

Electronics

The Norwood Lions Club are hosting an electronics and textile recycling day on May 5 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. with the proceeds going to fund new and ongoing community betterment projects. The bin will be set up in the municipal parking lot right behind the town hall; Lions members will be on hand to assist residents who can drop off unwanted or end of life electronics such as TVs, computers, hair dryers and anything with a cord or a battery (except for microwaves and large appliances).

Unwanted textiles such as blankets and cloths are also being collected, just make sure to seal them in a plastic bag. If anyone requires help moving items out of their home or to the bins call Lion Brian 705-639-5151 or Lion Jack 705-639-5246.
