First curlers help celebrate Cordwood’s 50th in Keene

Old met new at the 50th annual Keene Lions Club Kids Cordwood Bonspiel on March 30.

There were 180 participan­ts and another seven who curled in the first bonspiel in 1967 – Leane Bergout, Jim Weir, Donna Atkinson, Bonnie Clark, Rob McFarlane, Peter McFarlane and Dave Jordison.

The First Place Rink trophy in the Cordwood Bonspiel was presented by Lindsay Warmington and Sean Elmhirst, grandchild­ren of a cofounder of the event, Percy Elmhirst. The Percy and Jean Elmhirst Memorial trophy went to Georgia Nelson, Kaileigh Gabourie, Maddy Gabourie and Liam Gabourie. Other winners were:

Second: Tom Mather Memorial Trophy: Thomas Darling, William Darling, Elijah Levinskyi and Timothy Levinskyi.

Third: Trophy donated by Pepsi Canada: Travis Wesenberg, Kaden Beasley, Julia Beasley and Evan Beasley.

High Two Game Winner Trophy donated by Bonivan Windows: Rowyn Lichter, Keely Talbot, Claire Buchanan and Kira Lichter.

High One Game Winner, Doug Harris Memorial Trophy: Adrienne Allen, Victoria Beasley, Jocelyn Beasley and Brit Beasley.

Sportsmans­hip Award, Art Howson Memorial Trophy: Ella Smit, Indigo Chesser, Lili Smit and Jasper Chesser

Millie McFarlane and Dot Jorgenson, who ran the registrati­on desk for most of the five decades the Cordwood bonspiel has run, were honoured by the Keene Lions and Otonabee South Monaghan Township for their help over the years.

Reverse draw and dinner

The chances are one in 200 for winning a trip for two to the Yukon at the Lang Hasting Trail dinner May 5 at Elmhirst’s Resort.

The second runner up in the reverse draw will win $500 and the person with the 100th ticket to be drawn will win $100. Everyone will get an annual membership in the Peterborou­gh-Hastings Trans Canada Trail Associatio­n and a fourcourse Elmhirst dinner.
