Liver transplant successful for Lindsay father

A Lindsay man who’d been in dire need of a liver transplant is recovering in a Toronto hospital after a successful transplant.

Adam Sweeney underwent a nearly 12-hour surgery at Toronto General Hospital on Monday.

The news was posted to the Team Sweeney Facebook page Tuesday afternoon. The page was created by family and a friend to help find a Sweeney a match while he waited on an organ donor transplant list.

“The surgery was a success! He is stable and doing well at this time,” Team Sweeney’s Barbie Anne wrote on the page.

The donor, who wishes to remain anonymous, is also recovering well, Barbie Anne added.

Sweeney suffers from primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC). It’s an autoimmune disease that poses multiple complications. The disease tricks the immune system into believing bile ducts are infected, so bile ducts shrivel up, unable to function. Then the liver drowns in bile.

The father of two had been on a transplant list for more than a year. He almost underwent surgery once in March 2017, but on the day of the surgery, the doctor deemed it too risky for the donor.

Sweeney was in and out of the hospital with serious complications as he awaited a new liver.

Then, a few weeks ago, Sweeney was diagnosed with liver cancer, according to Team Sweeney.

Two days later, the devastating news was quickly turned around when Sweeney learned his cancer moved him to the top of transplant list and a match had been found.

Sweeney is the finance manager at John Dewar’s Auto Source and is a familiar face in Peterborough, having previously played at the Montreal House three times a week with his 1980s band, MIA.

Team Sweeney thanked supporters for their prayers and well wishes on Tuesday.

“Adam has a new liver! His new beginning starts today,” Team Sweeney wrote on the Facebook page.
