Soos won’t be running for city council
Steven Soos says he won’t be running for a city council seat in Otonabee Ward in the municipal election in October after all – instead, he plans to endorse Kim Zippel, another prospective candidate.
Soos, 23, is a social services worker living in Peterborough. He announced in January his intention to run for a seat in Otonabee Ward in the municipal election.
But now he says he wants to endorse Kim Zippel, who ran in the 2014 election for a seat in Otonabee Ward and says she will run again in October.
The incumbents - Dan McWilliams and Lesley Parnell - took the seats in Otonabee Ward the 2014 election. Neither has publicly mentioned re-election plans.
Candidates can only file their nomination papers starting May 1.
Zippel is a wetlands and forest preservation advocate who has spoken to council several times about potential environmental damage that could be done to Harper Park, as development takes place nearby.
Soos stated in a press release that he no longer intends to run, but he’s supporting Zippel.
“I know that I am leaving this community in good hands by supporting Kim,” Soos wrote in the release.
“Kim will connect with all segments and sectors of our community including our indigenous communities (important to me as an indigenous person), our farmers, our entrepreneurs, our children, our small-business owners, and so many more in need of a voice.”
The municipal election is Oct. 22.
