Cyclones whirl way to girls basketball title
The St. Catherine Cyclones edged St. Alphonsus 31-22 on Thursday afternoon to win the Holy Cross Family of Schools intermediate girls basketball tournament at Holy Cross Secondary School.
Peterborough Victoria Northumberland and Clarington Catholic School Board schools including St. Paul Peterborough,
St. Patrick, St. Teresa and Monsignor O'Donoghue battled at the day-long tourney to see who would make it to the finals and ultimately the top.
Monsignor O’Donoghue finished third.
St. Alphonsus also took on St. Catherine earlier on in the tournament, with the Cyclones winning by a narrow margin of just 16-13.
“It was stressful but it was a good game I think,” said Cyclones player Ava Flint, a Grade 8 student at St. Catherine. “We just played as a team and had good communication.”
“I think the best asset of our team is how coachable it is. You can tell these girls to change something they will change right away and they listen to their teammates and respond to it,” added Tracey Cremers a Grade 8 French immersion teacher and coach for the Cyclone.
“The game went well but there are a few things we still need to work on. Like positioning on the court to get those empty pockets to shoot and using the backboard more.”
Cremers said Monsignor O'Donoghue and St. Alphonsus were both tough teams and the margins of victory were slim in their round robin games.
Fatigue was one factor that she was concerned about, Cremers said earlier on during the tourney.
“Playing four games and only getting a two-hour rest will be hard not only for us but for whoever we face as well. I think as long as we keep our emotions in check we should have a pretty good shot to win this.”
