Honorary Trent degree for BCE president

Holocaust survivor Max Eisen to also be honoured by Trent

Four people will receive honorary degrees from Trent University at the Peterborou­gh university’s 2018 convocatio­n ceremonies.

The recipients include a corporate mental health advocate, a supporter of urban Indigenous communitie­s, an architect whose work is recognized locally and globally, and a Holocaust educator and survivor.

They’ll receive an honorary doctor of laws at separate ceremonies held in Peterborou­gh and Durham in June.

George Cope, president and CEO of BCE and Bell Canada, will be honoured for his work as a corporate leader and champion for mental health. Cope spearheade­d the launch of Bell Let’s Talk Day. He’ll get his honorary degree on June 5 at

Trent’s Symons Campus.

Sylvia Maracle, executive director of the Ontario Federation of Indigenous Friendship Centres, will be recognized for her advocacy work on behalf of Indigenous peoples, particular­ly Indigenous youth. Maracle is a founding member of the Native Studies Ph.D council at Trent. She’ll get her honorary doctorate on June 6 in Peterborou­gh.

Stephen Teeple, principal of Teeple Architects, will be honoured for his contributi­ons to Canadian architectu­re, which includes the design of four buildings at Trent. Teeple designed Trent’s child-care centre in 1994, the physics building in 1999, the chemical sciences building in 2008 and the student centre in 2017. He’ll get his degree on June 6 at Symons Campus.

Max (Tribor) Eisen, Holocaust survivor, educator and author, will be recognized for his efforts in Holocaust education and for promoting human rights. Eisen was liberated from the Ebensee concentrat­ion camp in Austria in 1945 after several years of slavery. He was the only member of his family to survive. Eisen receives his honorary doctorate on June 12 at Trent Durham GTA.

Trent president Leo Groarke said the honorary degree recipients bring worlds together through education advocacy, artistry and vision.

“It is a tremendous privilege to celebrate their exemplary achievemen­ts with our highest honour, an honorary doctorate from Trent University,” Groake stated.

Eight people were bestowed honorary degrees of law in 2017, including former Prime Minister Paul Martin.
