St. Peter Saints boys lacrosse team is determined to go one step further this season.

They’ve finished second at OFSAA three years in a row. They’ve started this year winning both tournaments they’ve entered including the seventh St. Peter Saints Invitational Wednesday at Trent University.

The Saints finished 3-0 beating Oshawa’s Maxwell Heights 6-4 in the deciding game.

They were missing two top scorers in Nolan Burke and Kalvyn Watson who are at the OHL Gold Cup.

Others stepped up with Holden Lowes scoring three goals and an assist in the final, Mason Tardiff two goals and Nate Allen a goal and assist.

“This will give us a better ranking going into OFSAA,” Lowes said.

“It will put us in a weaker pool and give us a better chance to get deep in the tournament. Our ultimate goal is to win OFSAA gold. We definitely have potential. We were missing a few bodies today and overcame some adversity.”

Saints coach Rod McGillis said his team is young but he likes their potential.

“Our goal is to win OFSAA,” he said. “St. Mike’s is a powerhouse and have a strong ability to recruit that no other team does. We’ll see if we can get to that point and see them again because they’re strong again this year. We’ll set the goal for OFSAA gold because this team deserves to set the goal that high.”

Parker Phipher scored three goals for Maxwell Heights and Will McCracken one. Maxwell Heights won the Crestwood Invitational last year.

“We always come to Peterborough knowing it’s going to be a tough match,” Maxwell Heights coach Jason Johansen said.

“We know Peterborough is a lacrosse factory and St. Pete’s has had a long history of being strong. We’ve seen them at OFSAA and we always like a good rivalry. It was 6-4 so it was close at the end.”

St. Peter also beat St. Andrew’s College 6-2 and Holy Trinity 7-2. Maxwell Heights ended up 1-1-1. Orillia’s Patrick Fogarty was 1-1-1, Holy Trinity 2-1-0 and St. Andrew’s 1-2-0. Holy Cross Hurricanes were 0-3 losing 7-5 to Holy Trinity, 6-5 to Fogarty and 8-2 to St. Andrew’s.
