Sex offender Yearley charged with fraud

Convicted rapist Steven Yearley is in trouble with the law again.

This time he is accused of defrauding someone of a large sum of money.

Following an investigation dating back to 2015, city police submitted a judge’s order to have Yearley brought before a judge in Peterborough provincial court.

On April 27, Yearley, 28, was charged with fraud over $5,000. It’s alleged Yearley stole more than $32,000 from a person whom he knows by accessing different types of credit, forging cheques and the fraudulent use of credit cards.

Almost to the day five years ago, local police held a press conference on May 7, 2013 to warn the public about Yearley living in the community. At the time, Chief Murray Rodd said they feared he was a high risk to reoffend.

Yearley had moved to Peterborough after being released from federal prison. He served his entire sentence of four years and six months for violently sexually assaulting a Huntsville woman on Hunters Bay Trail in 2007.

Police said Yearley chose not to participate in any programs in prison and by served his entire sentence so he wouldn’t be placed under conditions upon his release. However, Yearley did agree to a court order to keep the peace, allowing officers to monitor him on a regular basis.

Yearley was living on Donegal Street, leaving neighbours concerned for their safety. He would be back behind bars three months after that public alert after a police officer saw Yearley at Reid and McDonnel streets around 5 a.m. He was arrested for breaching his court order and sentenced to 30 days in jail.

Following his arrest, the owner of the home Yearley’s family was renting served him a no trespassing order and the family decided to move.

Yearley returned to Huntsville after serving his 30 days, but it wasn’t long before he was in jail again. Huntsville police arrested him in October 2013, for being on a walking trail while being bound by a court order prohibiting him from being on any walking or hiking trail without a family member. After serving 49 days in custody, in addition to time already spent in custody.

Yearley once again returned to Peterborough in May 2014, prompting police to issue another warning. By July of the same year, he was arrested again. Police say Yearley did not present himself to officers when they came to his home for a check-in.

Yearley is currently in custody awaiting a bail hearing on Friday.
