- EXAMINER STAFF

The Peterborough Wolverines will kick off the 2018 Ontario Football Conference season this weekend.

The Junior Varsity Wolverines, who won the Ontario championship last season, will host the Scarborough Thunder in a noon contest Saturday at the Thomas A. Stewart Field on Armour Rd.

Meanwhile the Senior Varsity Wolverines and the Bantam Wolverines will travel on Sunday to Mount Joy Park in Markham to open their season against the Scarborough Thunder.

The Wolverines will only play against three OFC teams that they have faced in previous years (Huronia, Toronto and Sudbury) this season. All the remaining games are against new opponents that have joined the OFC this year.

The OFC has expanded to include 20 clubs covering most of the province. There will be 53 teams participating in the three divisions as the OFC season officially begins this weekend.

The Wolverines are in their eighth season in the league.

On Week 2 on June 3 all three Wolverines teams will travel to Barrie to face the Huronia Stallions in the annual battle for the Cottage Cup. The Wolverines have won the cup in the first two years of its existence and are looking to retain it in 2018.

The Stallions will be top contenders in all three divisions in the Ramsay Conference (East) in the OFC and this should be a real test for the Wolverines.

While the Junior Varsity Wolverines won the Ontario championship last season the Senior Varsity Wolverines also reached the finals, losing to the Toronto Junior Argos.

The playoffs are July 28 and 29 with the conference semifinals that will involve the top four teams in each division (fourth at first and third at second).

The two winners will meet at the top seed’s home field for the Ramsay Conference Championship on Aug. 4.
