Minor Mosquito AA Tigers reach finals at tourney
The Peterborough Gauvreau and Associates Minor Mosquito AA Peterborough Tigers reached the finals at the Vaughan Vikings AAA tournament over the Victoria Day long weekend.
In Game 1 Friday night, the Tigers spotted Etobicoke AAA Rangers a 7-0 lead before storming back to win 12-8. The Tigers had 10 hits including doubles by Alex Kuypers, Casey Richardson, Gus Reid and Declan Ready. Richardson had seven strikeouts and picked up the win in relief of Kuypers.
After Saturday games were all rained out, Game 2 was played Sunday morning. The Tigers edged the Mississauga AAA Majors 7-6. The Tigers found themselves trailing 6-3 in the fifth inning before scoring four runs to complete the comeback. Aiden Stabler, Jag Turner and Jack Gauvreau had hits. Reid pitched a six-hitter with James VatcherNorman recording the final four outs.
In Game 3, Peterborough trounced Brampton 29-0. The pitching staff of Stabler, Ian Neck and Blake Moncrief combined for a no-hitter. Tigers hitters had 14 hits with Travis Heffernan, Vatcher-Norman, Stabler, Turner, Ready and Neck scoring three times each.
On Monday, the Tigers battled the Burlington AAA Bulls in the semi-finals. The Tigers scored four times in the fifth inning to take an 8-3 lead. The team pounded out 12 hits in the 9-3 victory. Kyle Duda and Richardson had two hits each. Hunter Young had a single, RBI and scored a run. Richardson picked up the win in relief of Kuypers with 3 2/3 innings of scoreless ball.
In the finals, the Tigers took on the undefeated Mississauga Southwest AAA Twins, who won the AAA Ontario Championships last year. The Tigers jumped out to a 1-0 early lead but the Twins responded with three in the bottom of the first and cruised to a 12-4 to win the tournament championship. Duda had three hits, scored a run and had an RBI in defeat. Kuypers scored two runs while Neck score the other. Vatcher-Norman, Duda and Stabler pitched well and racked up 12 strikeouts.
Next league game is Saturday against Whitby A at East City Bowl at 3:30 pm.
