Local astronomer­s focus on the summer skies ahead

The Peterborou­gh Astronomic­al Associatio­n (PAA) meets Friday at 7 p.m. at the Rotary Education Centre/Guest Services Building, Riverview Park and Zoo for their last meeting before a two-month summer hiatus.

Club member Rick Stankiewic­z will present The Green Bank Observator­y of West Virginia, sharing his experience of visiting this famous observator­y located in the hills of West Virginia that is home to the largest steerable radio astronomy dish in the world at 100 meters.

Following the main presentati­on is a group presentati­on by club members on the famous asterism of The Summer Triangle as well as a look at the Sky This Month program that examines the locations of the planets and upcoming astronomic­al events.

Zoo Concerts

The free summer concerts in the gazebo at Riverview Park and Zoo resumed Sunday, May 27 with Friends In Music Orchestra and Sweet Adelines performing. Sponsored by Peterborou­gh Utilities Group, the concerts happen Sundays from 3 until 5 p.m. every other week all summer long. The performanc­e schedule for the remainder of the summer includes:

June 10: Celler Door (pop and classic rock)

June 24: Knight Shift (big band sound, jazz, pop, swing, classics)

July 8: Four Front (pop, rock favourites with Terry Finn)

July 22: Wylie Harold & Band (classic blues band)

Aug. 5: Dixie Cats (Dixieland classics)

Aug. 19: Peterborou­gh Concert Band (traditiona­l concert band)

Sept. 2: Donny Woods Band (’60s, ’70s, rock ’n’ roll, country and blues)

All concerts are performed weather permitting. Just bring your own lawn chair, sit back, and enjoy the music.

Line Dancing

Activity Haven is offering mixed beginners line dancing through the summer. Classes, taught by Thom Whitby, take place Mondays at 1 p.m., beginning June 11 and running until August 13 (no classes on holiday Monday). The eight-week session costs $16.

Naturalist Outing

The Peterborou­gh Field Naturalist­s (PFN) are planning an all-day visit Sunday to Carden Plain, a globally rare habitat 65 kms west of Peterborou­gh. Member Jerry Ball will lead the group to this unusual alvar habitat that is home to an abundance of rare grassland bird species, butterflie­s and plants. It is possible that the group may see examples of loggerhead shrike, golden-winged warbler, osprey, black tern and more.

Those interested in attending should meet at Tim Horton’s at the Lansdowne St. Sobey’s at 7 a.m. Bring lunch, water, a camera for the excellent photograph­ic opportunit­ies, and binoculars. The accessibil­ity level is easy but does include some driving on a gravel road.
