County boosts new hospice care centre

Every Moment Matters campaign receives $175,000 to complete county’s $350,000 pledge

Peterborou­gh County Council presented Hospice Peterborou­gh with a cheque for $175,000 on May 16.

This is the final cheque for their pledge of $350,000 to the Every Moment Matters Campaign and the new Hospice Peterborou­gh Care Centre.

“We are so grateful to Peterborou­gh County Council and the residents of the County for their commitment to hospice care in our community,” ,” says Linda Sunderland, executive director, Hospice Peterborou­gh.

“Their contributi­on to the Every Moment Matters Campaign and the Care Centre Project has helped make the dream of a hospice residence for Peterborou­gh City and County a reality.”

Hospice Peterborou­gh offers 25 programs and services free of charge to residents of all ages living in Peterborou­gh and surroundin­g communitie­s who are living with or affected by life-threatenin­g illness and grief.

Garage Sale

The Kawartha Wildlife Centre (KWC) is holding a fundraiser June 2 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Otonabee Animal Hospital, 3881 Wallace Point Rd. The event includes a garage sale, vendor sale, live music, canine nail trims, and a barbecue.

KWC is a non-profit wildlife rehabilita­tion centre which will care for sick, orphaned and injured native Ontario wildlife. There will also be a booth set up at the event where you can learn more about the organizati­on.

Road trips

Activity Haven has some exciting Haven Express road trips coming up.

An excursion June 9 includes a visit to the Peony Festival in Oshawa for the afternoon, followed at 4:30 p.m. by a Medieval dinner and horse show at the Exhibition Grounds in Toronto. The bus departs at 11 a.m. and returns around 8 p.m. The cost is $75.

Trips later in the summer include a visit July 12 to Kingston Penitentia­ry with a guided tour of the facility, and a Mystery Bus Tour to a surprise destinatio­n happens Aug. 9. This trip has proven to be a very well received in past years.

Relay for Life

The Canadian Cancer Society presents Relay For Life Peterborou­gh on Saturday from 5 until 11 p.m. at Kenner Collegiate Vocational Institute, 633 Monaghan Rd. This nationwide event for all ages is held to celebrate survivors, honour those who have died, and raise funds to fight all types of cancer.

Nearly one in two Canadians can expect to be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime, so let’s help lower those odds by participat­ing in this event.

Golf Tournament

Activity Haven’s fifth annual golf tournament that takes place June 2 at Heron Landing Golf Club, 2361 Lansdowne St. W. The event begins are noon with a shot gun start.

The registrati­on fee includes 18 holes of golf, a cart rental, a delicious dinner and snacks. There will be a men’s and women’s longest drive contest and Merit Travel will award a trip for two for a hole in one.
