The Publican House Brewery recently won two awards for two brews at the 2018 Canadian Brewing Awards.

The Pub House Ale and Paddler’s

Ale won over judges in a blind taste test.

Pub House earned a gold in the German-style kolsch category and Paddler’s won bronze in the wheat beer: North American category.

The awards were presented at a ceremony in Halifax on Saturday.

The Publican House’s brewers weren’t at the event though, they were too busy brewing.

Since the Publican House Brew Pub opened last year, production has increased significantly to keep up with demand.

Kevin Buckle is the craft brewery’s head brewer and Derek Murray is the assistant brewer.

Buckle moved from assistant brewer to head honcho last year and Murray stepped into to the assistant role.

The duo said they were pleased to see that they’ve maintained the standard set by the previous head brewer.

The Pub House Ale was the company’s first brew when it opened in 2008. It’s a traditional German-style kolsch with apricot and biscuit notes and pilsner characteristics.

In 2014, Pub House won gold at the 2014 Ontario Brewing Awards. Two years later, it won bronze at the 2016 Canadian Brewing Awards.

Buckle said he’s pleased to see that he and Murray have been able to maintain the standard set by the previous head brewer.

“It feels amazing,” Buckle said of the wins.

Murray, who is in his first full-time brewing role, is overjoyed with awards.

“Winning Canadian awards within your first year doing it, feels great,” Murray said.

Although Buckle and Murray man the tanks, they said it’s a team effort, with many helping hands, that contribute to the product.

“It’s really nice to win something for everyone,” Buckle said.

The Paddler’s Ale came out last

June. It’s a coarse-filtered American wheat beer with a light flavour and hint of citrus.

The brew was created in support of the Canadian Canoe Museum, with a portion of the sales benefiting the museum. Since its release, about $7,300 has been donated to the museum.

The bronze nod is the first win for the wheat ale.

Nearly 2,000 entries were submitted into 55 categories for the 2018 Canadian Brewing Awards. A total of 310 breweries from across Canada took part in the 16th annual competition.

The Publican House could have a new product in the race next year – Buckle and Murray are currently working on something new, but remained tight lipped about it. An announcement will come out in the coming months.

In the meantime, beer enthusiasts can get their fill at the Kawartha Craft Beer Festival next weekend.

It’s happening at Millennium Park June 8 and 9 and features 11 craft breweries and one cidery.
