Local athletes off to OFSAA track finals in Toronto

The Kawartha District will be represente­d by 25 athletes, including eight from Peterborou­gh schools, in 32 events at the OFSAA Track and Field Championsh­ips at York University Thursday through Saturday.

They qualified by finishing among the top four in their events at the East Regional Track and Field Meet in Kingston last Thursday and Friday.

Adam Scott’s Heather Humphrey led the way by setting an East Regional record with a 12.92 metre throw in the junior girls’ shot put. It was the fourth consecutiv­e meet she has set a record in this season.

Adam Scott Grade 9 student Molly Strain was a double-gold medallist winning the open girls’ 1500m steeplecha­se and the midget girls 3000m run. St. Peter’s Taya Keast also qualified in two events winning the midget girls’ 200m dash and placing second in the 100m. Crestwood’s Jenna Dunn won gold in the junior girls’ 80m hurdles.

St. Peter’s Jennika Mitchell won a silver medal in junior girls’ long jump. Norwood District’s Austin Murray placed second in junior boys’ javelin.

Adam Scott’s Elise Emery won a bronze medal in junior girls’ high jump. St. Peter’s Tristen Jones finished third in senior boys’ 1500m. St. Peter’s Gustav Finley placed fourth in the open boys’ 2000m steeplecha­se. Norwood’s Marisha Thompson was fourth in the open girls’ 1500m steeplecha­se.

Also winning gold medals was Leah Pennings (St. Thomas Aquinas) in junior girls’ pole vault; Ian Dafoe (STASS) in midget boys’ pole vault; Aleah Everding (Cobourg Collegiate) in midget girls’ high jump; Cameron Bruce (CCI) n senior boys’ 110m hurdles; Mik Wilson (Brock) in junior boys’ shot put and Abby Teno (Port Hope) in midget girls’ 300m hurdles.

Also winning bronze medals were Holly Pennings in senior girls’ 100m hurdles and pole vault; Chris Flynn (STASS) in senior boys’ 110m Hurdles; Lillie Donovan (St. Mary’s) in midget girls’ discus. Fourth place finishers included Flynn in senior boys’ pole vault, Rachel Chayer (I.E. Weldon) in midget girls’ 1500m; Marc Marhand (IEW) in junior boys’ 300m hurdles, Wilson in junior boys’ discus; Sterling Nesbitt (Haliburton Highlands) in midget girls’ long jump and Joseph McKay (Port Hope) in open boys’ Intellectu­al impaired 800m run.
