- MARLYS KERKMAN kerkmam@gmail.com

Are you looking for a souvenir of your stay at a Buckhorn resort? Come to the Buckhorn tourist center for hats, key chains, or a mug. Maybe you are looking for a birthday gift for a friend or family member ... T-shirts, hoodie sweatshirts, crewneck sweatshirts from small to XXXL. Maybe you need ice to keep your fish cold. The tourist center has it. Or maybe you just need a public washroom. Come to the Buckhorn Tourist Center.

Maybe you need some ideas of where to camp, available resorts, what’s happening or a fishing map. Come to the Buckhorn Tourist Center. This center is completely stocked with brochures on restaurants, pharmacies, resorts, realtors, bed and breakfasts, houseboats, art galleries, museums and other attractions in this area and a large area of Ontario from London, Toronto, Orillia, Clarington, Ottawa, to Muskoka while firmly promoting Buckhorn and area activities and facilities.

Linda Dill, manager, helped by Marilyn, Joan and Andrea plus two summer students, provides the friendly greeting to visitors from all over the world and help them navigate this part of the world.

The gardens of the Tourist Information Centre, which make it a focal point of the community are cared for by Claudette Vanstone. Resident or cottager, boater, hiker or biker …come in for a look around.

The board of the BDTA is looking for new directors. The board of directors meets once a month. All directors are volunteers who possess a background in business. If interested in serving, please contact Margaret Weikmann, secretary, at 705-738-8222.

Gallery on the Lake

The Gallery on the Lake is soon to open its doors every day of the week from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., another sure sign that the season of travelling and coming to Buckhorn for world class art is upon us. World class art is at this gallery. Three kilometers east of Buckhorn on County Road 36 you will find watercolors, pastels, acrylics, oils and, regardless of media, you will find breathtaking.

The art of Jenny Kastner is on exhibit at the gallery until June 29. Kastner’s art reflects her love of the Ontario wilderness. Granite outcroppings, limestone hideaways, woodland animals all provide a particular magic which Kastner hopes her paintings illuminate. Come see for yourself at the Gallery on the Lake opening daily on June 15 and until then open from Wednesday through Sunday.

School benefit

There was a fire. The family whose children attended Buckhorn Public School lost everything. The community responded as did the children and staff of Buckhorn Public School. They had an art show. The gym at the school became an art gallery. Every piece cost $10. Every masterpiece was for sale. There was pizza, beverages and sweets to eat while viewing the works of art.

And there was entertainment. Each class put on its own show in their classroom. As it was close to Mother’s Day each mom got a flower.

After the classroom performance everyone went back to the gym for a dance performance. The art was picked up with all proceeds going to the Hilliard family.
