Chills, spills at St. Peter’s Family of Schools track meet
The chilly weather wasn’t enough to cool the excitement at the St. Peter’s Family of Schools Elementary Track and Field Meet.
The St. Peter’s Family of Schools is made up of the seven Catholic elementary schools in Peterborough. These elementary schools have their own track meet outside of the regular meets that are hosted at elementary schools in Peterborough.
Usually the track and field meet is held at St. Peter Secondary School, but due to technical difficulties the competition was relocated on the day across town to Holy Cross Secondary School.
Unlike most years, the competitors weren’t running under a hot early summer sun. In fact, most of the athletes and spectators were bundled up in jackets and track pants.
“It’s a lot colder than we would have expected,” said convener Craig Smith. “The kids seem to be holding up, but the adults are having a harder time with the cold than the kids do.”
Athletes were taking extra time before each event to warm up, which was more important due to the cold weather.
Almost 300 junior and senior elementary students competed in races and field events at Holy Cross. Students could run in the 100m, 200m, 800m and 1500m if they wanted a longer race. The field events over the course of the day were shotput, running long jump, triple jump and standing long jump for junior students.
Athletes competed in their qualifying rounds during the morning before the top competitors in each heat moved on to the afternoon finals. Ribbons were then distributed to the top three athletes in each event.
Results for the St. Peter’s Family of Schools Elementary Track and Field Meet were recorded on the day, but will not be posted online.
